This record was a huge dubplate to hear out in 1998. I’m pretty sure I saw Dom & Roland at least once that year, and so many other UK DJs that toured through DC. Maybe it was on some mixtapes that made their way to the states? It was such a fun, yet techy and futuristic sounding, piece of music.
NYE 98/99 a big group of us made it over to the UK to see our friend Anna while she studied abroad for a year, in Sheffield. After four days there, a few big nights out, we were ready for London. And going to London meant even more record shops to check out. Half of us on the trip collected records, and me being mister “I am a dnb robot, there is only dnb” about my taste in music at the time, I wanted to go to Blackmarket Records nearly every day.
The first chance we got to go there, we made it to the fabled basement. No idea who was working at the time, but Molly goes right up to the counter, asks what’s new, what promos they have, and they hand her this clear record. Immediately we hear what it is, and I ask if I can get a copy too. Stone cold stare, “no mate, no more copies.”
It probably took four days before I got a copy, and I can’t even remember what shop finally sold it to me, possibly Section 5? It was a pair of younger guys working the counter there, close in age to us, probably artists on Moving Shadow. I do remember them saying they had some used records for sale back home, and when I asked for Jo “R-Type” I got a laugh and a “no way”.
That trip was quite a haul of records though, some other funny stories from shopping. Pretty sure we also hit Mister Bongos, Sister Ray, and a couple used record shops. I also vividly remember eating really good Indian food with the whole gang one night, and then lunch one day by Blackmarket, was probably just me, Harry D. and Errol, we had really good Italian food. Also, we flew back to NYC, and our friend Amanda’s dad picked us up that night, drove us back to MD, had a huge bag of fresh NY bagels that were amazing.
