Matrix - “Apache”
Sleepwalk LP (Virus Recordings - VRSLP002)
Not sure where I first heard, but I remember how excited I was to get this album. I was DJ’ing out at least once a week, and the week I ordered this I was booked Friday down in Charlotte, NC, then back in DC on Saturday. The shipment of records hadn’t arrived by the time I left for Charlotte, a 6-hour drive south, but I had worked out a plan for a friend to get my records and bring to the gig at The Edge on Saturday. It was like this competitive drive to be the first to play a track out.
Charlotte was fun, but it wasn’t DC dnb scene fun. The gig was fine, I think it was just me and MC Escher/Sune, and we crashed at the promoters’ apartment, old friends from College Park who moved south soon after graduation. I may have had Waffle House for the first and only time ever, and then it was a race to get back to DC.
Pretty sure we drove straight to the venue in DC (The Edge), can’t even remember who we were on the lineup with, we were playing the front room, and I think Bebel/Books was playing as well. He actually got the delivery for me and brought it to the club. This was the second time I remember a moment like this, record is handed over, immediately find the one track I was hyped about, and put it in the mix. No planning, just quick mix, and then being excited to hear it so loud.
