Goldie - ‘Timeless’ (FFRR)
This is actually the first dnb release I ever bought, first on CD, then eventually I found a vinyl copy. I had just graduated from high school, I was already buying a lot of music on CD, almost ever week something new. I was a fan of Bjork, and had read in SPIN Magazine about her then boyfriend, a highly touted underground music artist: Goldie. I was in to car audio systems at the time, he made a style of music called drum & bass, and I liked bass. I bought the CD at Tower Records, this time the Annapolis location.
I cannot remember how much I listened to this album. I still listen to it occasionally, I actually find the intro to the whole album to be one of my favorite beginnings to any piece of music, getting chills when all the strings, pads, the vocal come together. There’s this one sound that just makes me think of waves, in a calming way. And then the drums come in, sucking me in even more to the album, and in to dnb as a whole. I had no idea that six months later I would be at my first rave, a few weeks later I’d be at the Rise warehouse in Baltimore and hear @thedjdara play out the first set of dnb I would ever hear, and soon after I would be buying my first records, including a single on Metalheadz (partly based on recognizing the logo), which I mention in MEMORY-001.
In 1997 (I think?) I got to see Goldie perform at the old Black Cat in DC, on his Timeless tour. I think Diane Charlemagne even sang. Eventually I got a copy of the album on vinyl, after taking care of @bensonn1’s record collection for a few years. I sorted all his records, cataloged them on Discogs for him, and he said I could have any doubles that I found... and ‘Timeless’ was one of them.
